Project Scope:
A 12.9 km ropeway connecting Sonprayag directly to Kedarnath, expected to be among the world’s longest and highest ropeway systems, reaching elevations of around 11,500 feet.

Travel Time Reduction:
The ropeway will cut down the demanding 16 km trek from Gaurikund—currently taking around 9 hours—to a comfortable 36-minute ride.

Technology & Capacity:
The system will use Tri-cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology, known for its stability and ability to operate in strong winds. It will handle approximately 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction.

Construction & Cost:
The project is being implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model at an estimated cost of ₹4,081 crore. Construction is expected to take about six years, followed by a 29-year operation period managed by Adani Enterprises.

Significance:
The ropeway is intended to make the Kedarnath pilgrimage easier for elderly and physically challenged devotees, reduce congestion on the traditional trekking route, and promote tourism and economic activity in the region.

This project is part of the Government of India’s broader initiative to enhance connectivity to important high-altitude pilgrimage sites. Approved in late 2025, development is currently in progress to modernize the Kedarnath Yatra experience
